Job description

Fleet and Commercial Supervisor at CWM Environmental

As the Fleet and Commercial Supervisor at CWM Environmental, I play a crucial role in overseeing the efficient operation of our commercial waste services and fleet management. My role requires a proactive approach to managing daily schedules, ensuring compliance, and supporting the seamless coordination between departments. Whether it’s managing work allocation, responding to operational challenges, or liaising with customers, every day presents new opportunities to drive efficiency and provide exceptional service.

My Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Reviewing and managing work rotas, ensuring the correct allocation of shifts and tasks.

  • Handling data input and system management, ensuring all operational records are accurate and up to date.

  • Uploading and processing jobs into our fleet management software, ensuring smooth workflow and real-time updates.

  • Managing communications by responding to emails and phone inquiries, addressing operational issues promptly.

  • Collaborating with other departments to align on commercial and fleet-related objectives.

  • Reacting to unexpected operational challenges with quick and effective problem-solving solutions to maintain service standards.

My Journey to Where I Am Now

My career in the industry began unexpectedly when I found myself working in the water sector. Once I entered the waste and recycling industry, I quickly discovered a passion for its dynamic nature and the variety of challenges it presents daily. I enjoy problem-solving, overcoming operational challenges, and the satisfaction that comes from finding solutions that benefit both the company and our customers. Throughout my career, I’ve taken a customer-focused approach in all my roles, and now, as a Fleet and Commercial Supervisor, I integrate the driver’s perspective to create balanced solutions that work for both parties. Despite the years I've spent in the industry, I still find excitement and motivation in my work every day.

Key Attributes for Success in My Role

To excel in my position, several attributes are crucial:

  • Proactivity and Adaptability – Being able to react quickly to operational changes and unexpected challenges.

  • Compliance Knowledge – Ensuring all operations meet strict environmental and health and safety regulations.

  • People Management – Effectively leading a team and maintaining strong working relationships with colleagues and clients.

  • Strong Organizational Skills – Managing workloads independently and prioritizing tasks effectively.

  • Customer Relations – Building and maintaining strong relationships with existing customers while negotiating with potential new clients.

  • Negotiation Skills – Working on tenders, contracts, and pricing to ensure the best outcomes for the business.

  • Analytical Thinking – Preparing and analyzing reports to drive operational improvements and efficiency.

What I Love About My Role & Challenges

One of the aspects I love most about my role is its variety. No two days are the same—whether I'm handling scheduling logistics, problem-solving unexpected issues, or working closely with other teams to improve processes. The constant change keeps me engaged and motivated.

However, the role comes with challenges, particularly in managing multiple responsibilities under tight deadlines. Balancing the needs of the business, customers, and regulatory compliance requires a high level of organisation and adaptability. Despite these challenges, the ability to find creative solutions and see tangible improvements in operations is what makes this role so rewarding.
