We know everything we do has an impact on the world around us. That’s why we’re always looking for ways we can increase the positive effect we have on our local environment.

We’ve taken significant steps over the last few years in becoming self-sufficient when it comes to energy consumption.

Our energy production

We’re committed to protecting the environment by ensuring that waste is treated as a resource and is reused or recycled wherever possible. That’s why we’ve taken steps to improve where the energy we use for our facilities comes from.

Landfill Gas (LFG)

At our site in Nantycaws, we’ve put the infrastructure in place to extract landfill gas from the earth and convert it into electricity via an onsite waste-to-energy plant. Already, the current average output is around 1 MWh which is enough to power 2000 homes.

Wind

A 0.5-megawatt wind turbine was installed at our Nantycaws site in 2014. Today, this produces electricity onsite to power our materials recycling facilities (MRFs) and our headquarters, as well as provide surplus power to the national grid when facilities aren’t in operation.

What is landfill gas?

Landfills create a host of gases from methane to carbon dioxide which can be used to generate electricity. In 2017, we closed our landfill and installed an LFG substation at our landfill site which generated enough energy to power our facilities.
